After 70 years of pumping the most iconic muscle cars in the United States, General Motors has outdone itself by stuffing a colossal V8 engine under the hood of its famous 2022 COPO Camaro, according to a recent blog post on the automaker`s official website. Other engine options include a 350 cubic inch supercharged 5.7-liter V8 with 580 hp and a 427 cubic inch 7.0 cubic-liter naturally aspirated V8 with 470 hp. Power is provided by a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission from ATI Racing Products. Chevrolet is already taking orders for the 2022 Camaro COPO, with prices for the 572 variant starting at $105,500. The naturally sucked 427, on the other hand, starts at $117,500, while the billed 350 returns $130,000. As this is a dedicated drag racer that is suitable for NHRA Stock and Super Stock eliminators, the 2022 COPO Camaro is not legal on the road. Chevrolet has built fewer than 700 units since restarting the COPO Camaro program in 2012. In recent years, interested customers have participated in a lottery to win an allowance for one of the 69 cars (a nod to the original 1969 Camaro COPO). For 2022, however, Chevrolet will not limit production and orders will be executed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Buyers can also join a private tour of the COPO construction facility in Oxford, Michigan, where each car is custom-made. A recent report suggested that the current sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro could be replaced by an electric performance sedan in the near future, but before the Camaro ditches fossil fuels, Chevrolet has taken its muscle car to the extreme with the new 2022 drag racing special Camaro coPO. For 2022, the CAMaro COPO is available with a gigantic 572 cubic inch (9.4-liter) Big-Block V8, which Chevrolet says «channels the spirit of the original 1969 Camaro COPO.» Chevrolet did not disclose power figures for the 572, but said it used a cast iron block with aluminum heads, a crankshaft and forged steel connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. The 2022 COPO Camaro can also be ordered with one of two small-block engines. The supercharged 5.7-liter (350 cubic inch) V8 is equipped with 580 hp, while the naturally aspirated 7.0-liter (427 cubic inch) V8 engine produces 470 hp. Each engine is mated to a three-speed TH400 automatic transmission from ATI Racing Products. The 2022 edition of the COPO Camaro, a non-road-approved car designed exclusively for drag racing, will be available with a 9.4-liter large-block V8 engine. That`s 572 cubic inches if you prefer U.S. measurements. While the 572 cubic inch V-8 is an option, the 2022 Camaro COPO will be offered with other LSX-based small-block engines. One of the available engines is a supercharged 350 cubic inch V8 with 580 hp.
In addition, a naturally aspirated 427 cubic inch V8 engine with 470 hp is designed. With the largest casting of the engine of the large block, Chevrolet has significantly increased the internal volume of the engine, thanks to an extended diameter for each cylinder, which has increased the maximum distance that each piston can move. Taken together, these two dimensions include the cubic inch displacement of an engine, which determines the amount of air allowed to be pumped through an engine. The flagship engine of the 2022 COPO Camaro has a 5.7-liter block, and with the help of a factory-installed compressor, the engine can reach up to 600 horsepower. Customers can also buy a 7.0-liter LS-based V8, but it can only reach 470 horsepower. For 2022, the production of the CAMaro COPO will not be limited. Chevrolet takes orders on a first-come, first-served basis, making it much easier to buy one. Previously, you had to enter your name into a lottery and be randomly selected by Chevrolet before you had a chance to get an order, so making Chevrolet`s drag racing monster more widely available is a very welcome change. It`s also not the only change Chevrolet is introducing for the 2022 Camaro COPO. In addition to a supercharged 5.7-liter V8 and the classic 427, the new CAMaro COPO enters the 2022 model year with a 9.4-liter or 572 cubic inch V8. In fact, it is the largest car engine manufactured by GM. The new 2022 CAMaro COPO will likely sell for $105,000 with the 9.4-liter variant and up to $130,000 for the powerful 5.7-liter 600-horsepower engine.
As a bonus, Chevrolet allows customers to buy the car as a rolling chassis that allows you to install their own engine. But the price of this variant is not yet known, because it is in limited production. Either way, every car comes with a carbon fiber hood, which means it`s lightweight, in addition to the wheel bars, to improve the safety rating. There`s even an optional parachute with trunk! But while it`s cool to use one on a busy highway to let everyone know how important you are, COPO isn`t legal on the road. But for the drag track, this car presents a serious challenge. The COPO Camaro is not homologated for the road, but qualifies for NHRA Stock and Super Stock Eliminators races. All CAMaro COPOs have a carbon fiber hood and wheel bars, while a trunk-mounted weight box and parachute are optional. In the past, Chevrolet limited the production of CAMaro COPO to 69 units per year (after the production series of the original CAMaro COPO of 1969) and allowed customers to participate in a lottery, but Chevrolet will not limit the production of this 2022 model and will not sell it on a first-come basis, first served.
The 572 COPO Camaro starts at $105,500, while the 427 starts at $117,500 and the 350 starts at $130,000. Customers are encouraged to «see your dealer» via taxes, registration and destination fees.
