Many courtiers, such as valets de chambre, received annual amounts in the courts of the late Middle Ages, which were sometimes supplemented by large, albeit unpredictable, additional payments. At the other end of the social ladder, those who held many forms of employment received no wages, as in slavery (although many slaves received at least some money), serfdom, and debt bondage, or they received only a fraction of what was produced, as in the partial lease. Other common alternative models of work were self-employment or cooperative employment, such as masters in craftsmen`s guilds, who had often employed assistants, or work and ownership of enterprises, as in medieval universities and monasteries. Other research suggests that early childhood gambling habits may influence how men and women negotiate. Men and women tend to view pay differently in terms of materiality. The overall level of confidence in a negotiation can also be a determinant of why men tend to perform higher in wage negotiations. A study shows that awareness of this stereotype alone can directly lead women to lower scores.
